Welcome to the first in our series of meeting different Star Wars Costuming Groups. Thanks to Sean for chatting to us about the Northwest Garrison.
About Northwest Garrison
Tell us a bit about who you are.
We are a Star Wars cosplay group called Northwest Garrison. We were formed in 2016 by myself and two other lads. The group was initially 3 people but has now risen to 50 members. The group is run by myself, Sean, and Tim. We attend public and private events and we try to raise as much money as we can for our chosen charity, Children with Cancer UK.
Where are you located?
We are based in the Northwest, hence the name, but we have members outside the area.
How long has the group been going?
We recently hit 2 years, having started in 2016.
How did you start?
Three lads started the group, and I was one of them.
Members, Events and Charity Work
How many members do you have and are you looking for more?
We have around 50 members and we are always looking to add new people to our already amazing group. Every member is awesome.
How many events do you roughly attend a year?
Last year I think we attended about 25 events, and this year has been pretty busy as well.
Is there a particular charity that your group supports?
Children with Cancer UK.
Characters and Costumes
What characters are in your group?
We started off as just the bad guys, but we now cover each trilogy on both sides and have also touched the Expanded Universe as well. We have Darth Revan, Darth Talon, and I think someone in our group is going to do Mara Jade.
What entry requirements do you have?
We do not have a minimum age as such, but the youngest in the group is about 14 or 15 and his mum is in the group also.
The requirement for the group is for the costume to be good. We ask people to submit a picture of their costume. We are not strict, but we do not accept fancy dress costumes either.
Star Wars, Cosplay and Community
What do you love about Star Wars and cosplay?
The first film I saw in the cinema was the original back in the 70s when I was a small little boy. It hit me right away and has never gone away.
I got into cosplay in 2012 and got my first proper Vader costume, which has been improved over the years.
Cosplay is great fun. You make fab new friends and the smiles you get when people see you in costume are awesome.
What’s the best thing about cosplaying for charity?
That you are raising money for an important cause while creating awareness and bringing smiles to the public’s faces.
What advice can you give for people looking to join a costuming group?
Basically, just have fun, do what you love doing and ignore negative people.
